Iron deficiency can cause symptoms and significantly affect quality of life even without pronounced anemia.

Possible symptoms include:

  • fatigue and exhaustion
  • concentration problems
  • reduced performance
  • hair loss
  • dizziness
  • headaches
  • restless legs
  • susceptibility to infections
  • brittle nails
  • shortness of breath
  • inner restlessness

Especially in women, functional iron deficiencies are often overlooked for a long time or attributed to “stress”. The body is sometimes much more honest than standard lab findings.

When can an iron infusion be useful?

An iron infusion may be useful especially:

  • with documented iron deficiency,
  • low ferritin values,
  • reduced transferrin saturation,
  • symptoms despite “normal” hemoglobin,
  • intolerance of iron tablets,
  • insufficient effect of oral preparations,
  • increased iron need,
  • chronic iron loss
  • or absorption disorders.

Before every treatment, we make an individual physician assessment based on symptoms and lab values.

Which values are checked?

Depending on the situation, we check among others:

  • ferritin
  • transferrin saturation
  • hemoglobin
  • iron
  • CRP
  • thyroid values

Fatigue or hair loss does not always have only one cause.

How does an iron infusion work?

Before the infusion, there is a detailed physician consultation, individual findings discussion and medical information.

The iron solution is then administered slowly through a vein.

Depending on the preparation, the infusion usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

During treatment and for 30 minutes after the infusion, you remain under medical supervision in our practice.

When is oral therapy not sufficient?

Not every form of iron deficiency can be treated sufficiently with tablets.

An iron infusion may be useful especially for:

  • intolerance of iron preparations
  • gastrointestinal symptoms with tablets
  • chronically low ferritin values
  • absorption disorders
  • more pronounced iron deficiency
  • desire for faster replenishment of iron stores

When can symptoms improve?

This varies individually.

Some patients report after a few days or weeks:

  • more energy,
  • better resilience,
  • less fatigue
  • or reduced concentration problems.

Complete replenishment of iron stores usually takes more time and should be accompanied by lab monitoring.

What does an iron infusion cost?

Iron infusion is a private physician service according to GOÄ.

Costs start from €150.95*, depending on the preparation used.

Private health insurance or supplementary insurance may partially or fully cover the costs depending on the tariff.

*Actual costs depend on preparation, dosage and treatment effort.

Frequently Asked Questions About Iron Infusions

Can iron deficiency exist despite normal hemoglobin?

Yes. Low ferritin values or functional iron deficiencies can cause symptoms even without classical anemia.

Can low ferritin values cause hair loss?

Yes. Iron deficiency can contribute to diffuse forms of hair loss and affect hair quality.

That is why we often check iron and ferritin values when assessing hair loss.

When is an iron infusion better than tablets?

An iron infusion may be useful when:

  • iron tablets are not tolerated,
  • absorption through the intestine is impaired,
  • values remain low despite tablets
  • or faster replenishment is desired.
How many infusions are necessary?

This depends on:

  • ferritin value,
  • iron need,
  • symptoms
  • and the cause of deficiency.

Depending on the starting point, one infusion may be sufficient or several sessions may be necessary.

Are there side effects?

Most iron infusions are well tolerated, but there is a low risk of an allergic reaction.

As with every infusion, occasional symptoms may include:

  • temporary circulatory symptoms,
  • headaches,
  • nausea
  • or reactions at the puncture site.

Before every treatment, detailed medical information is provided.
