Hello everyone,
Today I would like to share a personal look at my journey with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and how nutrition helped me regain more wellbeing.
The diagnosis
After my second pregnancy, I was exhausted, had mood swings and could not lose weight despite eating well and exercising. At first I thought this was simply the result of pregnancy, family life and recovery.
When the symptoms continued, I had my thyroid values checked. The diagnosis was Hashimoto's thyroiditis. It finally gave me an explanation for the persistent tiredness and weight stagnation.
Treatment and the first improvement
I started treatment with levothyroxine and my blood values improved. In the beginning, my energy and mood improved too, and I lost some weight. But after a while, symptoms returned.
Looking deeper
I began reading more about autoimmune disease, nutrition and the microbiome. One recurring theme was that nutrition can influence inflammation, energy levels and wellbeing, even if it does not replace medical treatment.
Nutrition changes
I reduced gluten, changed my exercise routine from high intensity to lower-impact workouts and reduced sugar. I also tested how I responded to dairy products and paid more attention to fermented foods.
Nutrient-rich foods
Vegetables, berries, nuts, seeds and omega-3-rich foods became regular parts of my meals. I also paid attention to nutrients relevant for thyroid health, including selenium, iodine and vitamin D.
The microbiome
Fermented foods such as kefir, kombucha, kimchi and fermented vegetables became part of my routine. A healthy microbiome cannot cure an autoimmune condition, but it may support overall wellbeing.
A personal note
This is my personal experience, not a universal treatment plan. Hashimoto's needs medical diagnosis, lab monitoring and individualized care. Nutrition can be one helpful part of a broader medical strategy.
