AI-generatedYou lose your train of thought, search for words or take longer to complete tasks. Such changes can be unsettling. Women also report them during the menopausal transition, often together with poor sleep and exhaustion.
What does brain fog mean?
The term describes subjective concentration and memory difficulties. It is not a separate diagnosis. People may find themselves more easily distracted or less able to recall information. This does not automatically mean dementia. Equally, it does not prove hormones are the sole cause.
Why is sleep so important?
If night sweats wake you repeatedly, recovery is missing the next day. Difficulty falling asleep, stress and low mood can also affect concentration and resilience. These factors can reinforce one another: a bad day increases tension about the next night.
Which other causes should be considered?
Medical history determines what is investigated. Heavy bleeding may make iron deficiency relevant. Thyroid disease, medicines, sleep apnoea and depression are other possible explanations or accompanying conditions. Dismissing a woman with “just stress” does not help. Neither does automatically treating every case of exhaustion as hormone deficiency.
What can you observe for the consultation?
- When did the changes start, and are they increasing?
- Is there a connection with bleeding, night sweats or a new treatment?
- How many hours do you actually sleep?
- Is there snoring, interrupted breathing or marked daytime sleepiness?
- What affects work and daily life most?
What support may help?
Treatment depends on the causes. It may include targeted treatment of hot flushes, support for sleep problems or psychological treatment. Diet, regular activity and recovery provide an important foundation. However, they do not replace necessary investigation.
Hormone therapy is not a general treatment for every form of brain fog. Testosterone is not a standard therapy for fatigue or concentration problems either. Depression requiring treatment should be managed according to the relevant recommendations.
When should you not wait?
Sudden confusion, new speech difficulties or paralysis are not a typical “brain fog moment”, but a reason for immediate medical help. Gradual, increasing problems or those substantially restricting daily life should be assessed promptly.
You can collect your observations with the perimenopause check and discuss them at your appointment. An unremarkable check result does not invalidate symptoms.
