Which vaccinations are important for adults?
STIKO recommends that adults have their vaccination status checked regularly, ideally every 10 years.
This includes booster vaccinations against:
- tetanus
- diphtheria
- pertussis (whooping cough)
- polio
Further vaccinations depending on risk
Depending on age, pre-existing conditions or personal risk, further vaccinations may be useful or recommended.
Recommended vaccinations from age 60
For people aged 60 and older, STIKO recommends, among other things:
- annual influenza vaccination
- regular COVID-19 booster vaccinations
- pneumococcal vaccination
- RSV vaccination to protect against severe respiratory infections from age 75
- one-time vaccination against shingles (herpes zoster)
Why vaccination recommendations matter at older age
Especially at older age, infectious diseases can be significantly more severe. Many people unfortunately underestimate this consistently until they are laid up for two weeks and suddenly start googling vaccination recommendations.
